GCHQ Royal Puzzle Question 2

GCHQ Royal Puzzle Question 2

Back to the main thread.

"We thought we had a nice idea for a teaser, but clearly had ambitions beyond our station so we had to railroad this one a little to make part four work. If you have a well-trained eye you should be able to think of your own clue for part three, and then you’ll be on track to provide the missing answer.

  1. Count of Savoy (1178 – 1233)
  2. King of England (1284 – 1327)
  3. ???
  4. Alexander (1743 - 1827)
  5. King of Scots (1512 – 1542)"

OK, so the words above the main puzzle contain several references to ttrains: "station, railroad, on track." One of my students suggest Thomas the Tank Engine before we'd even started Googling the titles with the years.

The list becomes:

  1. Thomas I
  2. Edward II
  3. ?
  4. Gordon IV
  5. James V

So the missing member of the main group of friends is Henry and the missing number is the III. Sadly, Alaric the Mountain Train didn't make the cut. Can I also just mention how insanely detailed the Thomas the Tank Engine wiki is? Some people really care about exactly which gauge or which coupling system these fictional trains have.
